Ursala Hudson x James Johnson
Tlingit weaver Ursala Hudson is a powerhouse. I’ve always admired weavers, the patience and dedication it takes. Chilkat Blankets called “Naaxein” are sacred cultural objects among the Tlingit. They are containers of knowledge. I’ve always taken time to study chilkat design. Chilkat formline has a highly complex set of fundamentals. Traditionally, the men would paint a pattern board of the design for the women to follow during the weaving process. You weave everyday for 2 years straight, you can finish a blanket. I had never images doing a design, until Ursala asked me to be a part of her project.
Ursala is weaving an 8 ft. Chilkat Totem Pole. I’m honored to have drawn out the pattern for her to follow. It’s incredible what she’s doing. She’s part of a legacy of Tlingit weavers. Follow her journey on seeing this incredible piece come to life. Gunalchéesh Ursala for the opportunity. Keep shining!
